Overview

The Koyikkal Palace was built by the Venad Royal Family in the 16th century for Umayamma Rani. The palace is a two-story building constructed in the typical Kerala architectural style. It is situated at a distance of 18 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. It was later converted into a museum complex which housed many historically important artefacts. The Kerala Department of Archaeology, which is concerned for the palace, has set up two museums for tourism here - the Folklore Museum and the Numismatic Museum.

Attractions

Koyikkal Palace is an important heritage attraction in Kerala located near the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. It opens the central courtyard, and large rooms built around it. This Folklore Museum at Koyikkal Palace was built in 1992 and houses many interesting musical instruments, household utensils, work equipment and folk art models. This is the only place in the State where one can see a Chandravalayam. The museum also holds other royal family property. It houses a remarkable collection of historically important coins from different periods and different parts of the world.
