The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads over more than 12,000 hectares is located about 32 kilometres away from Thiruvananthapuram City. Emplaced in the south-eastern side of the Western Ghats, it serves as the drainage basin of River Neyyar and its tributaries, Kallar and Mullayar. The sanctuary offers good trekking options which provide fair opportunities to spot the rare flora and fauna. The diversity of the vegetation and wildlife of the area makes it an exemplary gene pool reserve. The Neyyar Dam is also located near the sanctuary whose picturesque premises are popular picnic spots.
